Title:”How to Prepare an Excellent Presentation (or at Least an Acceptable One)?”
The workshop addresses the guidelines on how to prepare an excellent presentation of one’s work, which can range from a paper in a conference to a thesis before a committee. The workshop intends to be very interactive, so participants are requested to send in advance examples of presentations they have previously given, one of them being chosen to start the workshop. Afterwards, one presents the key aspects to take into consideration when preparing a presentation, considering structure of information and identification of the audience’s expectations and constraints. Then, a detailed view on how to prepare the actual presentation information is addressed, accounting for all existing recommendations. The logistics involved in giving a presentation are also shown. The initial presentation is given again, modified according to the recommendations, in order to highlight the diffenreces. Conclusions are presented at the end.

Title: “Science Communication for Researchers”
“Science isn’t finished unless it is communicated”, as stated by Sir Mark Walport translates in a very simple way that doing research isn’t an end to itself. Until the knowledge created in the research units is translated into something meaningful for lay audiences it hasn’t yet fulfilled its purpose. We will discuss ways that can be used by researchers to better convey their messages to the non experts, be it fundamental or applied science, and do some simple exercises to get PhD students started down this path.
Title: “Social Media for Researchers”
In the last decade, online tools and social media have exploded in popularity and usage. Science has to reach such diverse audiences and make itself heard among misinformation, fake news and pseudoscience, it has to get people where they are with interesting and reliable content. Not to do it would be a waste of opportunity. Also, using social media provides the possibility to have society interact directly with the scientific community, breaking down communication barriers and promoting close interaction that fosters trust which is the first step to have a fruitful connection. We will explore the social media landscape and its potential for scientists to communicate their science and comment on current themes, and do some practical exercises, from a paper to a tweet.

Research Software Engineer
I completed a BSc and an MSc in Computer Science at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. I first worked in Machine Learning during an internship at INESC-ID focused on neural network models for poetry generation. In my MSc I specialized in Intelligent Systems and Software Engineering and my thesis was on optimization for Architecture and Structural Engineering with Prof António Leitão, as part of the Algorithmic Design for Architecture group. In 2018 I joined Microsoft Research Cambridge as part of the inaugural cohort of the Artificial Intelligence Residency – a training program for Machine Learning engineers. As part of this one year program, I worked with the InnerEye team on brain tumour segmentation and with the SmartReply team on automated reply suggestions for Outlook and Microsoft Teams. After the Residency, I joined Microsoft’s All Data AI team as a Research Software Engineer. During this time, I worked on multiple problems, including video classification, code autocompletion, and mesh generation. Most of my time was spent working on the recently announced project HSD (Holographic Storage Devices), where we use a combination of physics, optics, and machine learning to read and write data as holograms.
